VIRTUAL DESKTOP INFRASTRUCTURE

A short introduction to the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.

Today we talk about Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.

Let’s start giving the definition of this new concept. Virtual desktop infrastructure or VDI is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized (local or remote) server.

All the components of the desktop are virtualized, which allows a highly flexible and much more secure desktop delivery model.

This approach supports a more complete desktop disaster recovery strategy as all components are essentially saved in the data center and backed up through traditional redundant maintenance systems.

It is basically the practice of separating the desktop environment and associated application from the physical client device that is used to access it. Instead of having a Desktop Computer in each workstation of an office you will find a much cheaper hardware device that will only have the function of connecting monitor, keyboard and mouse to the remote desktop.

If a user’s device or hardware is lost, the restore is straightforward and simple, because the components will be already present at login from another hardware device. In addition, because no data is saved to the user’s device, if that device is lost, there is much less chance that any critical data can be retrieved and compromised.

There are of course different ways a VDI can be delivered and as always it is very important to understand what strategy your service provider is using. Another very important aspect that has to be taken into consideration when you decide to go into this direction is of course the Internet connection that your office or work place has. Since all the desktop are ran remotely, you will want to make sure that there is enough bandwidth for all the employees to work without delay on their workstations. You might also want to consider the idea of having a backup internet connection in case the primary should fail. Not being able to connect will mean that none of the users will be able to use their computers. This last consideration is true of course only if the server are running remotely over the internet. If you have all of your infrastructure in house, this will not be an issue.

In the next article we will discuss more in depth the advantages of adopting a VDI solution and we will give you a few examples of scenarios in which this strategy is recommended.
