VIRTUAL DESKTOP INFRASTRUCTURE: BENEFITS

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure benefits

Depending on the nature of your company’s IT infrastructure, it can take advantage of a great number of benefits that a VDI solution brings.

As we discussed in the last article, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is the practice of hosting workstation operating systems and applications on a virtual server.

Users can access the “virtualized” operating systems and applications from small computer called “thin clients” or terminals, workstations, tablets, smart phones, etc., as long as the devices can connect to the host server.

If your company is interested in optimizing its workstation requisition and maintenance, it should consider adopting a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).

VDI solutions typically have unique features that will appeal to specific needs, but most VDI solutions will, at the least, provide the following benefits:

  • Quick and easy “workstation” provisioning
Once your company’s IT team has created a virtualized workstation with an operating system, applications, and security configurations, it can be used as a template and deployed any time a user needs a new workstation. This will of course save time and allow users to be productive instead of waiting around for your IT staff to build a computer, install software, and patches, but most of all will reduce incredibly the amount of possible mistakes in the configuration of the new working environment.
  • Centralized patch management
Since all machines are hosted on one server, it is easy for your company’s IT staff to ensure that all patches are updated in a timely manner. This will allow a much easier management of the updates without requiring to move from workstation to workstation to complete each one of them.
  • Security configurations
New security threats are discovered every day and in order to keep your company safe, your IT staff needs to perform frequent updates to avoid any possible leak of information. With a VDI solution, it will be easy to update security patches to all the virtualized workstations and ensure that security settings are standard on all virtualized workstations.
  • Secured data
With a VDI solution, sensitive data is secure because all workstations are virtualized and hosted on servers in a data center. User will be able to work on the data from anywhere, but the data will never leave the datacenter. In the event that one of your company’s laptops, tablets, or smartphones is lost or stolen, you won’t have to worry about possible data exposure.
  • Anywhere access of virtualized workstations
This is probably one of the greatest advantages of this type of solution. Users will be able to access their virtualized workstations from home, work, or vacation from many computing devices such as smart phones, tablets, and laptops. This will increase the productivity without creating security issues, because virtual workstations are isolated from the personal devices hard drives.
  • Just one system to troubleshoot
Problems can generally be resolved from within the data center; there’s no need to run out to the actual PCs. Since images can usually be accessed from any connected workstation, a user experiencing hardware trouble on their usual PC can simply go to another workstation and access their data and applications while he waits to get a new hardware device.
Other great advantage for system administrators will be that since the image of the operating system is the same it will guarantee a much easier debug process than on an undefined quantity of workstations with different hardware, drivers and patches.
  •

Let’s now take a look of some the cons of this type of solution just to give you a full picture and understand if this is the right solution for your business.

  • Cost
VDI will require a major investment in server hardware, and possibly in storage and network infrastructure, versus inexpensive PCs that can be acquired in stages or upgraded a few at a time.
  • Skills
Administrators will need to learn the VDI software’s capabilities and limitations.
  • Single Point of Failure
Server-side problems can affect multiple users. If that one server goes down, every user relying on that machine will be unable to work.

It is though very important to choose if your company has the skills and wants to invest in implementing a VDI solution or if it will be easier to buy a solution from a provider.
